With the grand reopening of the pool coming later this month, I got the opportunity to sit down with Kaydene Gilbert. She has incredible memories of the Reed's Gym Pool from lifeguarding there, to attending men's swim meets and partcipating in women's swimming and synchronized water ballet intramurals.
Events like these made the pool an essential piece of the ISU campus decades ago, and we're hopeful its reopening can provide this energy and school spirit culture once again. Both community members and students can enjoy the pool starting with its opening on November 20th.
The pool has been a gathering place full of competition, recreation, and hours of enjoyment for many years. Alumni like Gilbert are thrilled to see the pool with water in it again and will continue coming back to ISU campus and Reed's Gym to enjoy the thrill and nostalgia of the pool once again.
After eight months of renovation, all are invited to celebrate the grand reopening of the Idaho State University Reed Gym Pool November 20 at 5 p.m. at 1291 Martin Luther King Jr Way in Pocatello. President Robert Wagner will give brief remarks at the event.
Renovations on the pool began in March 2024, after Idaho State received funding from the Idaho Department of Public Works Deferred Maintenance fund for needed repairs. The pool, which originally opened in 1951, serves as a resource for both campus and the community, was closed beginning in July 2021 for repairs.
Staff are currently being trained, and the pool will be open to the public in a limited capacity beginning in early December, with a full opening beginning in January 2025, said Campus Recreation Associate Director Karen Homstad.
