KISU's McKenzie Young visits with Janie Gebhardt about performances sponsored by the Pocatello Branch of the NAACP and 2Great4Hate, with the additional support from the Idaho Humanities Council, a State-based partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Living Voices, a Seattle-based theater group will be in town March 4 and 5, 2024, preforming for 8th graders in all four middle schools in the district over two days. A public performance for the community will be held at Alameda Middle School at 6:30 on Monday, March 4.
Living Voices combines dynamic solo performances with archival film and photos to bring history to life and make the audience part of it. The performances in Pocatello will highlight the diverse cultures and dynamic changes in the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the 20th century through the experiences of Julia, who emigrated with her family to the Northwest from Sweden. Julia defied traditional gender roles and conventions by becoming a nurse, traveling throughout the state of Washington to serve her new American community during the 1918 flu pandemic.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council, a State-based partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Local sponsors include the Pocatello Branch of the NAACP and 2Great4Hate. This is a wonderful event for the whole family. The performance is free, but donations will be accepted to help fund future programs for schools and the community. More information is available by emailing janiegebhardt@gmail.com
