The original field, installed in 2009, was facing increasing challenges due to the region's unpredictable weather patterns. Rain and snow made the field unusable in the spring and late fall, limiting ISU's softball team's ability to both practice and compete.
According to Senior Project Manager Wayland Richards, who oversaw the project, the decision to upgrade the old surface to new turf was driven by the need for a more weather resistant surface.
