Karen Leibert a Ph.D. in Russian History with a minor in Modern European History from the University of Maryland. She received a IREX grant to study in the Soviet Union, but the USA boycott of the 1980 Olympics in the USSR resulted in her being denied a visa for entry for her studies. Dr. Leibert pivoted and received a Fulbright grant to continue her research in Finland at the University of Helsinki (from the Napoleonic Wars until 1917, Finland was part of the Russian Empire and a collection of Russian History was housed at the university). Returning to Idaho Falls, Dr. Leibert continued to teach history classes at Idaho State University (ISU) and continuing education for District #91 in Idaho Falls. In 2005, she coordinated the World Nuclear University summer course at ISU. Dr. Leibert continues to educate our community on all matters of Russian history, and recently received the Mayor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Community Education for her seminars on Russia’s current war in Ukraine.
