Episode 17: Part 2 with Green Beret (Ret.) Joe Serna who shares his near death experience and the miracle he found in veteran treatment court.

In this episode, Dan shares a discussion with Retired Green Beret, Joe Serna who was awarded three Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts from three combat tours in Afghanistan. Joe describes the events surrounding his near death experience as he drowned while trapped inside an overturned vehicle in an irrigation canal. Joe lost consciousness and explains how he drifted into an alternate reality. He was the sole survivor of that incident as he saw his three comrades receive lifesaving care to no avail. After getting out of military service, Joe struggled with feelings of confinement and helplessness and used alcohol to cope with the loss of his friends. Through a series of alcohol related incidents, Joe found himself in veteran treatment court. It wasn’t long before he was locked in a jail cell after admitting to drinking alcohol under supervision in the program. As fate would have it, Joe did not face his fears alone.

Dan Miller is using his Military Veteran benefits to complete a graduate program at Idaho State University. Dan served gallantly as a Navy Hospital Corpsman in the Fleet Marine Forces. After his honorable discharge, Dan found himself redefined as a Veteran who battled with PTSD, alcoholism, substance abuse, and addiction. Dan found strength in Recovery, enjoys a life worth living, and is pursuing his MBA in Project Management.
