KISU is proud to co-sponsor Constitutional Conversations with Dr. David Grey Adler and the Alturas Institute, held Wednesday evenings at 7 pm beginning January 9th, and running through January 30th.

There is a small admission fee charged for the general public. Students and sustaining KISU donors are admitted at no charge. Sustaining Donors should simply show up to the event, announce themselves as sustaining KISU donors, and the KISU representative will handle all needed verification.

Each lecture is typically 90 minutes long, our KISU broadcasts are shortened to 60 minutes, and exclude the final 30 minutes of post-lecture Q&A. To hear the full 90-minute recording please look for audio files posted underneath each show-topic below. Posts are typically completed within one week after an event. 

Week 1 - Jan. 9, 2019:  “America at the Creation:  A Republic or a Democracy?”

( This program examines the reasons why the Framers of the Constitution created a republic form of government, and how the United States evolved into a democracy, through both institutional and constitutional changes, as well as through assertions of rights and liberties by American citizens).

Week 2 - January 16, 2019: Perennial Challenges to American Democracy

(This program explores the conditions necessary to the achievement and maintenance of the health and vigor of our constitutional democracy, and the critical importance of protecting the Bill of Rights and the integrity of American institutions).

Week 3 - January 23, 2019 - Democracy and Leadership

(This program addresses the nature and role of leadership in a democracy. Majoritarianism is important, but democracy still needs leaders as much as any other system of government. Who holds office at a particular juncture an have a dramatic effect on the nation and history).

Week 4 - January 30, 2019 - The Future of American Democracy: Confronting Challenges, Fixing Flaws

(Has democracy a future? The ongoing challenges and threats to our constitutional principles, institutions, and democratic norms raise the vital question of what our institutions and citizens can do to preserve and strengthen our system of government).
