October 20, 2022 the Alturas Institute, The City Club of Idaho Falls, and KISU hosted a second round of conversations about “Russia’s War on Ukraine: What’s Happening Now and What’s Next,” with two local experts who have studied Russian affairs throughout their careers, Jeff Carr, the Senior Director for External Affairs at the Museum of Idaho and Dr. Karen Leibert, Adjunct History Professor at Idaho State University.

The event (recorded audio linked in this post) featured two 30 minute presentations and a 30 minute Q&A. Among the topics are Russia President Vladimir Putin’s reasons for invading Ukraine and the question of Russia’s endgame.

Carr earned a master’s degree in Russian Studies from Stanford and is a former Russia and East European analyst for the CIA. In that role, he authored numerous presidential briefings for two administrations. He currently teaches humanities courses at The College of Eastern Idaho.

Leibert earned a Ph.D. in Russian history from the University of Maryland and received a Fulbright research grant to work in the Slavic Collection at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She is also the recipient of a Ford Foundation research grant.
