In late June 2021, the Pacific Northwest Heat Dome brought unprecedented, deadly temperatures to the region. Portland, Oregon reached a record-setting 116 degrees, and local officials say 69 people – mostly older residents – died during the extraordinary week. Now Multnomah County, home to Portland, is suing a number of fossil fuel companies and organizations.

Mountain West mines hit with 83 safety violations in April as citations rise nationwide
The Mine Safety and Health Administration issued 335 violations in April at 20 mines across 15 states. Mines in the Mountain West accounted for 83 of the violations, 17 of which were considered "significant and substantial."

New Mexico and Nevada are among at least a dozen states that have considered so-called "green amendments" to their state constitutions so far this year. The amendments are modeled after Montana's constitutionally guaranteed right to a clean environment.

Analysis: Population growth across large swath of Western U.S. returns to pre-pandemic levels
Earlier this month, the US Census Bureau released its 2022 county-level population estimates. The Economic Innovation Group recently analyzed that data at a regional level, and across the West it found that - while population growth rates remain well above national averages - they have slowed to near pre-pandemic levels.

UI Extension tour to highlight creativity of Pocatello area gardeners on August 12th
The tour, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. MT, will also provide a venue for UI Extension to highlight many of its popular, related programs. Participants will be invited to bring sack lunches to the grounds of Marshall Public Library, 113 S. Garfield Ave., Pocatello, during a lunch break.
