A conversation with Mal Layne on Don't Call it Jazz

DCiJ

Don't Call it Jazz is proud to present ISU alum, Mal Layne in studio to discuss her new album, Integration by Parts, released on City Creek Records, ISU's new record label. Mal was a graduate of the music department in 2022 and is now studying in graduate school at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City on trombone.

Mal was an honorary member of ISU's Commercial Music program, which has a requirement that all graduates release an album as their final project. Mal worked on her album over the past two years, writing some amazing music for several different jazz ensembles, and the result is an awesome debut!

Mal and host Jon Armstrong discuss the process of making her record, stories from her time at ISU, and how she got into Juilliard as the only incoming graduate trombonist! We are so proud of Mal Layne here at ISU Music, and we are just as sad to see her leave as we are thrilled to watch her go on.
