Idaho State Civic Symphony: Meet Me in New York September 23rd!

The Idaho State Civic Symphony will kick off its 2022-23 classical concert series season, themed Notes from New York, with the performance titled Meet Me in New York on September 23rd at 730 pm at the Performing Arts Center. Nell Flanders and Shandra Helman joined us at KISU for a conversation and concert preview.

The ISCS performance on 9/23/2022 will feature the debut of new symphony conductor Nell Flanders, the world premiere of Murmurations by guest composer Edward Smaldone, guest soloist Shandra Helman on clarinet, and works by Bernstein, Schubert, and Stravinsky.

About guest composer Edward Smaldone: He grew up in a large Italian-Irish family singing and playing guitar in rock bands. He later developed classical piano skills, received a PhD in music, and is now a music faculty member at Queens college in New York.
Smaldone wrote the piece Murmurations for Danish clarinetist and Concertmaster of the Danish lifeguard orchestra, Soren Phillip Bricks Hansen. The piece was performed in Denmark 2021, but it was composed for wind orchestra. Dr. Nell Flanders contacted Smaldone, and he agreed to rearrange the piece for standard orchestra.

Edward Smaldone was kind enough to provide us with a fantastic sense of his musical background, a lot more comments about the inspiration for this piece, and he gave us a few notes about what to listen for. That thirteen minute clip, a great companion for concert goers, is available below:
