Most people have heard of fencing; few know the challenge and intensity that comes with competing in the artistic sport. For a select group in Pocatello, fencing is everything.
The Leavitt family has been involved with fencing for years, and now is a driving force of the fencing scene in southeast Idaho. Amy Leavitt has been fencing for years, and now enjoys the sport from the sidelines as a coach.
The head coach of the Pocatello Fencing Club and ISU Beginner Fencing class instructor, who also happens to be her father-in-law, Phil Leavitt, explained Pocatello has a very passionate fencing community, and while the sport may not be the most well-known, the people who are in it, love it.
Both the class and club are opportunities to learn to fence, however Leavitt explained the major differences.
if you’re interested, you’re encouraged to sign up for the Beginner Fencing PEAC course in the fall or stop by a club practice on Wednesdays. They have beginner class from 6-7pm and intermediate competitions from 6-8pm at The First Methodist Church in Pocatello. More information can be found at pocatellofencing.com.
