The City of Pocatello is expected to proclaim September as Chronic Pain Awareness Month during its Thursday, September 3, City Council meeting.
Dr. Heather Gilmore, an assistant lecturer at Idaho State University who lives with chronic pain, will receive the proclamation. Gilmore has also researched how online support communities help people navigating long-term illness by sharing practical information about treatments, symptoms, and self-advocacy.
Gilmore says chronic pain can affect daily activities, relationships, and emotional well-being—and that many conditions are not visible to others. She hopes the proclamation will increase public understanding, reduce stigma, and help connect people interested in establishing an in-person chronic-pain support group in Pocatello.
Nearly one in four U.S. adults reported chronic pain in 2023, according to the CDC’s National Health Interview Survey. People living with chronic pain, along with family members, caregivers, health professionals, and others interested in learning more, are encouraged to attend the meeting. The proclamation is expected around 6 p.m.
