Episode 7: Green Beret (Ret.) Joe Serna confronts PTSD and Alcohol Abuse after Recovering from an IED and Suicide Bomber Attack.

In this episode, Dan shares a discussion with Retired Green Beret, Joe Serna who received three Bronze Stars and two Purple Heart Awards from three combat tours in Afghanistan. Joe describes the familial challenges he endured growing up in a mixed Mexican/ American Indian family of immigrant farm workers who rallied behind equal worker rights with activist Cesar Chavez. Joe carried his family’s hard working heritage into the special forces where he fought alongside coalition forces to defend Liberty and Freedom in Afghanistan.  After sustaining life threatening injuries from a suicide bomber attack, Joe experienced fear, depression, PTSD, and Substance Use Disorder with Alcohol which cost him his happiness.  Listen and Discover how Joe regained peace in a higher power and enjoys serenity today in part 1 of this series. 

Dan Miller is using his Military Veteran benefits to complete a graduate program at Idaho State University. Dan served gallantly as a Navy Hospital Corpsman in the Fleet Marine Forces. After his honorable discharge, Dan found himself redefined as a Veteran who battled with PTSD, alcoholism, substance abuse, and addiction. Dan found strength in Recovery, enjoys a life worth living, and is pursuing his MBA in Project Management.
