Senate Bill 1245 was an attempt by Bayer, the producer of RoundUp, to curb the ability of Idahoans to bring lawsuits against pesticide manufacturers in the state.

House Bill 653 is a bill introduced to the Idaho House on February 26, 2024.

According to the Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides, HB 653 essentially fucntions as a compromise bill after SB 1245 failed to pass. While HB 653 doesn't specifically mention "failure to warn" claims, it still functionally prevents these cases from moving forward in state tort law or common law, both of which are explicitly mentioned in the bill text.

Glyphosate, the key ingredient of Bayer’s product RoundUp, has been linked with health conditions including but not limited to Parkinson’s disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and other forms of cancer.

Over 35 countries have passed legislation or are actively making efforts to severely restrict or ban glyphosate usage within their borders, with Germany most recently having implemented an all-out ban that started at the beginning of 2024.
