Exploitation and Emissions: Cartier Dior Eliasen Talks Fast Fashion— Three-Part Series, Part One

Cartier Dior Eliasen
Cartier preparing for Park City Fashion Week

In the first episode of this three-part series, SI host Jodie Schwicht speaks with local fashion designer Cartier Dior Eliasen— a graduate of Parisian fashion school Institut Français de la Mode and former designer/sewer for brands Charles de Vilmorin, Dior and Ellery. Episode one discusses fast fashion as a concept, the harms of this industry, and more ethical alternatives consumers can adopt.

Fast Fashion is the large-scale reproduction of clothing designs for the mass market. In recent years, concerns about the environmentalism of this business model, as well as human-based ethics, have been brought to light.

This challenge is global in nature. According to a scientific research study published by York University in March of 2022, The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry, contributing 8% of all carbon emissions and 20% of all global wastewater, with an anticipated 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The fashion industry is single-handedly responsible for more carbon emissions than international flights and shipping combined and is responsible for the consumption of 79 trillion liters of water annually.
