Waste on the Move: Storage, Safety, and Idaho’s Nuclear Waiver

This two-part series examines the recently planned shipments of spent nuclear fuel to Idaho National Laboratory and what they mean for Idaho’s energy future and public safety.

In Part 1, INL’s Christian Natoni explains the history and purpose of the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement and the new targeted waiver for these shipments. He discusses how long-term storage research at INL supports the license renewals for 53 nuclear plants nationwide while maintaining strict safety and monitoring standards.

In Part 2, Snake River Alliance executive director Lee Ford traces Idaho’s legacy of nuclear waste, discusses transportation risks and dangers associated with long-lived radioactive waste storage. She outlines grassroots strategies for Idahoans who want to protect the Snake River Aquifer and push for cleaner alternatives.
