Sustainable Idaho: From Ditch to Pipe: Saving Water, Saving Energy

Bill Shaeffer
/
Idaho State Journal

On today’s episode, Madison talks with Wade Egan, a farmer and rancher in Southern Bannock County to discuss the newly-finished Hawkins pipeline project in Arimo. Egan works as the Project Manager for both the Marsh Creek Irrigation District and the Hawkins Pipeline Project. This project reduced the energy usage and water loss from seepage and evaporation by converting open ditches into 10 miles of underground pipes. As a result, the new irrigation pipes provide 3,220 acres and 12 shareholders with clean, gravity-fed water.

Madison Long is a sophomore majoring in Communications and English with concentrations in Multiplatform Journalism and Professional Writing. She enjoys learning about sustainable practices within the local community and how these can expand throughout the state of Idaho. She looks forward to sharing what she learns from researching and through interviewing with field experts!
