BLM Completes Emergency Horse Gather in Southeastern Idaho

Caleb ASHBY

In an effort to protect and maintain wild horse herds in Southeastern Idaho, the Bureau of Land Management Owyhee and Four Rivers field offices' staff gathered 74 total wild horses last week.

This is in response to the raging Paddock fire which has burned 187,000 acres, including acreage wild horses feed and live on. The horses were then transported to the Boise Off-Range Wild Horse Corrals, where all their needs are being met. BLM Boise District Office representative Heather Appelhof comments on this emergency gathering.

This is unusual for the BLM, as normally the gatherings are well-planned out and for herd population management purposes. Appelhof assures us the horses are all in good health and were each checked by a veterinarian upon arrival.

Unfortunately, the horses will be in the corral for the next couple of years. During this time, efforts will be made to replenish the resources on the Southeastern Idaho land to a point where it can sustain the herd population and the wild horses can be returned.
