What ISU researchers are learning about hearing loss, cutting-edge technology and how our brains learn to hear again

ISU researchers are discovering how the human brain adapts to hearing technologies such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. ISU professor Curtis Billings and doctoral student Garrett Anderson describe how advanced hearing technology works and how hearing impacts our day-to-day activities. Join us to learn more about the audiology (hearing) clinics and services on ISU campuses in Pocatello, Meridian, and Salmon, Idaho.

Dr. Curtis Billings is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders in the Audiology Program. He graduated from the University of Utah and then the University of Washington with a Masters in Audiology and a PhD in hearing science. He worked for about 15 years as a full-time research scientist in Veterans Affairs in Portland, Oregon before coming to Idaho State about four and a half years ago. He studies how the brain and resulting behavior change with hearing loss and then when starting to wear hearing aids especially in noise complex listening situations. The long-term goal of this research program is to improve diagnosis and treatment of hearing impairment.

Garrett Anderson is an Au.D. student at Idaho State University with a focus on neural plasticity in hearing loss and hearing rehabilitation. His current clinical interests include hearing aid and cochlear implant outcomes, tinnitus evaluation and management, and hearing conservation.

Martin Blair joined Idaho State University in 2022 as the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Dr. Blair began his career as a special education teacher. Then, spent two decades at the Utah State University Center for Excellence in Disabilities in a variety of research and training leadership roles. In 2013, he moved to Missoula, Montana where he spent nine years directing the University of Montana Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities. In these various roles, Dr. Blair has worked extensively across the U.S. to improve the quality of services, supports and policies for individuals with disabilities of all ages, and their families. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-e-blair/">https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-e-blair/</a><br/>
