Dr. Nell Flanders, ISU’s Director of Orchestral Activities and music director of the Idaho State-Civic Symphony talks about her own musical journey and how it led her to ISU. She talks about ISU’s efforts to bring beautiful music to Idaho communities, and how ISU brings young artists together to learn and hone their talent. Dr. Flanders discusses her international outreach activities that have a strong musical impact on ISU and Idaho.

Active as a conductor, violinist, violist, and educator, Dr. Nell Flanders brings her dynamic musicality to performances in a wide variety of genres, from orchestral classics to contemporary music, tango, blues, and period instrument baroque. In August 2022, Dr. Flanders began her tenure as Director of Orchestral Activities at Idaho State University where she leads the Idaho State-Civic Symphony and the ISU Chamber Orchestra. In 2025, the orchestra released its first recording, Strata, of eight original compositions by Argentine composer/bassist/band leader Pedro Giraudo.

From 2018-2021 Dr. Flanders held the position of Georg and Joyce Albers-Schonberg Assistant Conductor with the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, conducting the PSO in ballet, popular classics, and holiday concerts. She has conducted multiple performances with the National Symphony Orchestra of Panama and the Chelsea Symphony in New York, and given many orchestral premieres, including collaborating in the creation of a new work by composer Derek Bermel with violin soloist Midori.

Dedicated to educating the next generation of musicians, Dr. Flanders conducted the Repertory and Symphony Orchestras at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division from 2014-2021. She travels frequently to Panama to conduct youth orchestras and teach conducting workshops.

Martin Blair joined Idaho State University in 2022 as the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Dr. Blair began his career as a special education teacher. Then, spent two decades at the Utah State University Center for Excellence in Disabilities in a variety of research and training leadership roles. In 2013, he moved to Missoula, Montana where he spent nine years directing the University of Montana Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities. In these various roles, Dr. Blair has worked extensively across the U.S. to improve the quality of services, supports and policies for individuals with disabilities of all ages, and their families. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-e-blair/">https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-e-blair/</a><br/>
