I’m so honored to welcome two brilliant guests for a stimulating in-studio conversation. Dr. Elizabeth O’Donnell, chief neonatologist for the Portneuf Medical Center, and Dr. Nell Flanders, conductor and artistic director of the Idaho State-Civic Symphony.
We were brought together to discuss my new composition for saxophone solo and orchestra, “Voluntary Breath” which will be performed by the ISCS on Friday September 26th at Jensen Hall, conducted by Nell Flanders, and featuring drummer Jens Kuross and electric guitarist Craig Green.
Much of the composition “Voluntary Breath” was inspired by my family’s experience in the NICU. My son was born incredibly premature and spent his first nine months of life in the NICU due to a myriad of medical complications. Dr. Elizabeth O’Donnell was one of my son’s first neonatologists, along with her colleague at PMC, Dr. Robin Lawrence.
In this episode of “Don’t Call it Jazz”, the three of us discuss neonatology, music therapy, intonation, music, resonance, the science of sound, and many more things. I was so excited talking to them and thrilled to present our conversation on air.
Many thanks to CJ and Jamon for hosting us in-studio, and for all the work they’re doing for KISU during this difficult time for public radio.
