I’m thrilled to have my student Coulesse Kindle on “Don’t Call it Jazz” to talk about his two recent EPs, “The 3 Step” and “Clarity”, both out on City Creek Records under his artist name, DJ Deka. Coulesse was a generational student in the commercial music program, and it was a joy to work with him while he studied at ISU.
These two EPs show DJ Deka’s dynamic range as an artist, “The 3 Step” is an old-school dusty sample built listen, bouncy, propulsive, and grooves like hell. “Clarity” marks his artistic growth as Deka crafts intricate textures, ambience, and an impressive vocal debut. I am so proud of these EPs, a tremendous contribution to the City Creek Records catalog.
Coulesse’s next chapter is to move to Los Angeles to chase his dream of being a professional musician. I wish him well, and can’t wait to hear where his music goes from here.
