Ostomy Awareness Month

Stephany Gill and Mary Nelson, RN, joined KISU's McKenzie Young to help raise awareness and erase the stigma surrounding this life-saving surgery. Support is available and if an ostomy is necessary for you or a loved one, don't be scared of it.

October is Ostomy Awareness Month. According to the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) Ostomy surgery is a life-saving procedure that allows bodily waste to pass through a surgically created stoma on the abdomen into a prosthetic known as a ‘pouch’ or ‘ostomy bag’ on the outside of the body or an internal surgically created pouch for continent diversion surgeries.

These guests explain why an ostomy may be necessary, the role of an ostomy nurse and to share their experiences as a patient and a provider. A number of resources exist online - https://www.ostomy.org/ or https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/

McKenzie began working at the station in 2003 while moseying her way through her undergraduate degree in Communication and Rhetorical studies [2012]. Her outgoing personality and involvement in various activities makes for a perfect fit to promote campus and community organizations and events*.
